Mary, Star of the Sea
Early Learning Center

Mary, Star of the Sea ELC is truly more than just a school with four walls. It is a faith filled with a community of learners, faculty and parents, where each person is seen as a unique and gifted individual of our school and parish family.

As early childhood educators, our work with children involves a commitment to serve the best interest of the young child in a Catholic Christian environment. We can best do this by understanding and supporting the developmental needs of each child, and by modeling respect, kindness and love.

Our belief in professionalism and ethics supports our quest for excellence in the educational quality of our program. We provide continuing education/training and certification to our teachers and staff – Our teachers have four year degrees in in early childhood or elementary education and are Montessori certified. The dedication of the teaching staff is evidenced by their longevity of service and the continuity that they provide.

The ELC is also a Montessori student- teacher training site for Chaminade University of Honolulu.

It has been a pleasure for us to see our students learn and grow as they prepare from age two to move on to kindergarten. Over the years our ohana (family) has grown with numerous enrollments of siblings, and now second and third generations of students who attend the ELC.

As servant leaders to our school and parish community, we have a special responsibility to provide unfolding learning experiences that enhance a child’s self-discovery and quest for meaning. We promote diversity within our school– serving children of diverse backgrounds. Approximately 45 percent of our enrollees are Catholic, and 55 percent are other Christian and non-Catholic. A majority of our students live in East Oahu, however many are from other areas of Honolulu and Oahu. Approximately 48% percent of our students are Asians; 35 % native/part Hawaiian; 21% white, 4 % Hispanic and 2% African American. Some of our teachers are also fluent in Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Tagalog.

The ELC honors and supports cultural and economic diversity within its school community.

We share an educational vision at Mary, Star of the Sea ELC where we consistently strive to improve our programs and develop creative and innovative curriculum to better serve our students, parents and the community. We invite all parents and interested persons to observe our program and experience first hand our unique learning environment. Please call our office to schedule an observation.
